Cost to Maintain Inground Pools in the GTA

How much work is involved in maintaining an inground swimming pool in the GTA

Are you thinking of taking the plunge and installing an inground pool in Toronto? With swimming pools providing summer-long fun for all ages, as well as additional value to your home – it can certainly be a worthwhile venture. But how much time is involved with pool maintenance each year? In this article we’ll discuss everything you need to know about owning an inground pool (whether it is a vinyl or fiberglass), so that you have all the facts before making the decision.

Opening the Pool in the Spring

After a long winter, a good time to open the pool is when temperatures are above freezing temperatures. This involves removing the pool cover, cleaning it and storing it away for the season. You then check and startup the pool equipment, prime your pool pump, shock your pool to raise the chlorine level to the correct levels, filter/clean the existing water. You can either do this yourself or hire pool opening contractors to do this for you (average cost in the GTA is around $500).

Cleaning the Pool

When it comes to debris, there are many types of pool cleaners, from the manual skimmer nets to the robotic pool cleaners.  The great thing about the robotic pool cleaners is that they make pool maintenance very easy and automatic.

In terms of the water treatment, as we have outlined in our previous article, saltwater pools are easier to maintain than chlorine pool systems.

Heating the Pool

In Ontario, pool heaters are a must to get the most of your inground pool. There are various types of pool heaters, including gas or solar pool heaters, and depending on how warm you want your pool, this would cost you about $1000 a season.

Winterizing the Pool

Once cooler weather comes in, you will want to blow all the water out of the lines to ensure your pipes won’t crack in the deep winter months, drain the pool to just below the jets, and cover your pool.  Again, this is something you can do yourself or hire pool closing services for around $500 in the GTA.
